As an ex-player I get it! I understand the many challenges professional athletes face day-in and day-out. Today more than ever the level of attention on players, their performance and private life is massive. This can be a fantastic opportunity but also something we all need a break from. Every player is unique, some want to take their game to the next level, be more confident, move past distractions, perform better under pressure and some players want to remove the weight of the world from their shoulders and just play with freedom.
I know you are capable,
ALREADY able to play at your very best with both a sense of pressure and deeper freedom,
you are ALREADY everything you need to be.
This can sound like the opposite of growth but hear me out. As a professional player I always wanted someone who could assist me to reach my goals, someone I could trust, was reliable, who cared and could offer real value. Someone who had my back at every stage. Managers came and went, clubs came and went, agents came and went, friends came and went, teammates came and went, even partners came and went. I recognised that many showed up for good times, big games and when the money was in yet I also knew I was responsible for me, not for them. I was missing a key ingredient that I had been searching for in achievements, being liked, being physically powerful. I had to look away from everyone and everything for a while to find some space for myself.
After this period of contemplation I decided to take the search into into my own hands, creating a five, three and one year performance plan. The first phase was to slot into place the most important piece of the puzzle. The foundation driving the day in, day out actions. I sought advice and knowledge from top psychologists, NLP practitioners and others to try and harness that inner power which was sometimes felt before, during and after games but only ever fleetingly. It seemed to pop up every now and then while listening to music on the team bus, watching an inspirational youtube documentary in bed or during a rich run of form. Eventually after the initial interest and curiosity wained I started to realise that tools, strategies and ‘thinking positive’ seemed to assist but never actually lasted. They always came up short and I was always going back time after time hoping for something new that worked. It became exhausting, practicing a routine, 'thinking it' but never really 'feeling it'. It made less sense the more I realised I never had to do these things playing as a hungry child with the world at my feet, everything just flowed. Back then I showed up and was effortless inside yet from the sidelines they saw a high energy, relentless player covering every blade of grass, always seeing oportinuties to get on the ball. To me it was nothing, it felt like I could play another 90 minutes when the game was finished. I was in love with the game, I couldn't help but play. After a series of insights major breakthroughs came I rediscovered what I was searching for. This led to quaifying as a certified life coach and the creation of my own life coaching, self development and career coaching process which encourages players to bring it all out, the power from inside them, what they already have, what they already are at their core and also enjoy the ride as every ex-player says... ‘it goes sooo fast’ 🥱😂
